Homeowner Tips For Hiring Contractors
In Oregon, contractors are required to be licensed with the Construction Contractors Board (CCB).

Homeowners can check the status of a contractor’s license by going to the CCB website at www.hirealicensedcontractor.com .

The CCB strongly encourages homeowners to check a contractor’s license before asking the contractor for a bid, or before entering into any verbal or written agreements.

Homeowners have rights as well as responsibilities when hiring contractors. Homeowner rights include having access to information concerning licensed contractors, and access to the CCB Dispute Resolution Service if a problem develops during a project. Homeowner responsibilities include checking a contractor’s license to make sure it is active, checking references, making detailed plans for the project (including how much you can afford), and using a written contract.

Homeowners can reduce their chances of having a problem by following these guidelines:

  1. When checking a contractor’s license on the website:

  2. • Verify that the contractor is actively licensed. An active license means that the contractor can legally work in Oregon, is bonded, carries liability insurance, and gives you access to the CCB Dispute Resolution Process.
    • Check the contractor’s history of complaints (disputes) and other licenses associated with the contractor’s name.

  3. Get more than one bid from licensed contractors before making a decision.

  4. Don’t automatically accept the lowest bid. A higher bid may be worth the price in better materials or workmanship.

  5. Ask for references and check with previous customers. Were they satisfied with the work? Was the work completed on time? Did the contractor return phone calls?

Consumer publications with additional helpful tips are available on the CCB website or by calling the CCB at 503-378-4621.
